Bio

Your long lost family, the one you never knew about.
The Suffringtons are a five-piece band known for their vocal malleability and anthem like chorus’ that guarantee to have their audience singing along by the end of the performance. The Suffringtons combined life experiences helps them to bring stories, both old and young, to life. With trenchant storytelling lyrics and vigorous melodies and harmonies that interfuse alt-country, folk and rock ‘n’ roll, the audience will be taken on a journey.
The Suffringtons eclectic instrumentation, talent and performances have made them a favourite within the Ballarat and surrounding area music scene. They originally started as a duo when Mark O’Brien (guitar, bass and vocals) and troubadour Anthony Brooks (vocals) began to follow a lifelong dream of writing and creating music together. After a chance encounter and rekindling of an old friendship in a local pub, Paul Giles joined the band on blues harp. This morphed again a short-time later to include Jeremy Beggs as an additional singer and multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, mandolin and vocals). Ross Tweeddale (drums and vocals) finally completed the line-up in the last couple of years. In all cases, the strength of individual friendships brought each member to the band, which is evident through their infectious on stage connection.
The Suffringtons has been writing original music from their formation. The songs can range from the personal of “Who Are You Stranger?” that speaks of a relationship breakdown to songs such as “1855” which taps in to Ballarat’s history, with reference to the Eureka rebellion. The Suffringtons are equally comfortable playing a fast, electric, upbeat tempo style that engages their audiences as well as slowing things down with acoustic numbers and thought provoking melodies and harmonies. A feature of the bands performance is their willingness and trust in each other to interchange lead vocal duties.
The Suffringtons self-titled debut album will be digitally released in early 2020 in time for their first major regional tour in April/May. To keep up with the latest news, sign up to the mailing list.
